Getting started

  1. Add BlurMark from the Chrome Web Store
  2. Open a page with something you want to hide, and click the BlurMark icon in the toolbar
  3. Choose how to hide it
    • Select element: Click an element on the page to hide it. Use the ↑ ↓ keys to widen or narrow the selection. Press Esc to finish
    • Select text: Drag over the text you want to hide, then click Mask. Press Esc to finish

BlurMark doesn’t work on pages that were open before you added it. Reload the page.

FAQ

Q. How do I remove a mask?

Click the mask while selecting elements, or click Remove in the list in the popup. You can also turn a mask off without deleting it. To remove all masks on the page, click Clear all in the popup.

Q. I want to see the hidden content for a moment

Use the Temporarily show switch in the popup, or the shortcut (Alt+Shift+B by default), to temporarily show the masked content on the page. Masks come back when you press it again or reload the page. You can change the shortcut with Change shortcut in Settings.

Q. How do I change the effect or strength?

In the list in the popup, you can change each mask’s effect (Blur, Pixelate or Solid) and strength (Low, Medium or High). The defaults for new masks can be changed in Settings.

Q. Something I hid shows again after reloading

If a site changes its page structure, BlurMark may not find what you hid. Please hide it again. Also, right after a page opens, the original content may be visible for a moment before the masks are applied.

Q. Some parts can’t be hidden

Shadow DOM contents, canvas, PDFs and iframes (other pages embedded in the page) are not supported.

Q. Can BlurMark protect passwords or other secrets?

BlurMark only changes how the page looks; the original content stays in the page. It can still be read from the page source or developer tools, so please don’t rely on it to protect secrets. It is meant for hiding things you don’t want to show before sharing your screen or taking a screenshot.

System requirements

  • Google Chrome 111 or later

Your data

BlurMark does not communicate with external servers, and we do not collect any of your information. Your masks are stored only in your browser. Note that text you hide with Select text is saved unencrypted so the mask can be restored. For details, see the Privacy Policy.

Deleting your data

  • Delete each site under Saved sites in Settings
  • Delete everything with Delete all settings in Settings
  • Removing BlurMark from Chrome deletes all saved settings
