Getting started

  1. Install LocalMarks and open it (from the Mac App Store on Mac, or the Microsoft Store on Windows)
  2. Add the LocalMarks extension from the Chrome Web Store (it doesn’t appear in store search, so please use this link)
  3. Open the app’s settings (Settings… (⌘,) in the menu on Mac, or Settings & Backup at the bottom of the sidebar (Ctrl+,) on Windows) and copy the token. Paste it on the extension’s options page and click Save and Test Connection
  4. On a page you want to save, click the LocalMarks icon in the toolbar (or press ⌥⇧S on Mac, Alt+Shift+S on Windows). You can also use Save this page to LocalMarks or Save link to LocalMarks in the right-click menu

You can also save a page without the extension by pasting its URL into the field in the app.

FAQ

Q. The extension says it can’t connect to LocalMarks

Make sure the LocalMarks app is running. The extension sends articles to the LocalMarks app running on the same computer.

If you regenerated the token in the app, paste the new token on the extension’s options page and click Save and Test Connection again.

Q. How many articles can I save?

The free version saves up to 50 articles. Purchase Unlimited (a one-time purchase) under Plan in the app’s settings to save as many articles as you like.

Purchases are tied to your Apple ID (Mac) or Microsoft account (Windows). After switching to a new computer or reinstalling the app, click Restore Purchase on a computer signed in with the same account (on Windows, purchases come back automatically with the same Microsoft account).

Purchases on Mac and Windows are separate.

Q. The article text isn’t saved

For pages that require signing in, or pages rendered with JavaScript, the article text may not be available when you save by pasting the URL (the URL and title are still saved). Open the page in Chrome and save it again with the extension. The article text is then taken from what is shown on the page.

Q. Where is my data stored?

Articles are stored in a database on your computer. You can check and change the location under Data Location in the app’s settings.

Changing the location copies your current data to the folder you choose and switches to it (the data in the old location isn’t deleted). Avoid synced folders such as iCloud Drive or OneDrive, which can corrupt the database.

Q. How do I back up my data or move it to another computer?

Use Export Backup… in the app’s settings to export all articles, including article text, to a JSON file. Restore from Backup… adds the articles to your existing data (articles with the same URL are skipped).

Q. I only want to keep URLs, not the article text

Turn off Save article text when saving pages in the app’s settings to save only the title, URL, summary and image. You can fetch the text for each article later. You can also delete just the article text of a saved article and keep its URL, title and summary.

Q. How do I change the display language?

Choose Japanese or English under Language in the app’s settings.
